‘Go back to your roots’, famous blogger Holly Becker said, creator of the fantastic interior blog decor8 during her lecture about how to start blogging at Decorex 2011. And so I did, though it was not that easy. She really got me thinking about my childhood and although to be quite honest, I really can’t remember that much of it; one thing that definitely stuck out was my G.C.S.E art examination piece. I produced a series of prints based on nature, and despite my art teacher at the time really not seeing the potential in what I was attempting to create and dismissed it with a fail, someone somewhere (the examiner) saw its potential and gave me a B. Not quite an miraculous A, but definitely far from the predicted failure expected. From that point on it made me realise that everyone has a different opinion. And if one person doesn’t necessary enjoy it, someone else most definitely will.
So I’ve gone back to these prints, and thought about how much I enjoyed designing a pattern and layering up the different colour paints, rubbing the paint onto this simple polystyrene board and sticking that to the paper and pressing down with my roller and restarting again. One day I’d like to return to this only not printing onto paper, but onto fabric. That, my friends, is the dream.
